Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) Training

Designed for experienced remote pilots, this training program delivers the theoretical foundation required for the CASA Beyond Visual Line of Sight Outside Controlled Airspace (BVLOS OCTA) examination. Achieving this theoretical training and exam pass enables operators to legally execute advanced RPAS missions under an approved ReOC across Australian non-controlled airspace, significantly expanding operational range and data collection efficiency while minimising field deployments.

This course also introduces the JARUS Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) methodology and the practical development of a Concept of Operations (ConOps), both critical components of planning BVLOS operations beyond the scope of the CASA examination.

Program Overview

  • Core Focus: Targeted theoretical preparation and practical knowledge application for the CASA BVLOS OCTA exam standard.

  • Delivery Method: Expert-led instruction supplemented by contextual scenario-based exercises designed to deepen complex airspace and operational awareness.

This course is strictly preparatory; formal CASA BVLOS examinations are conducted externally and managed independently of Aviation Australia’s RTO framework.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Australia, a BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) rating is mandatory whenever you operate a drone outside your direct line of sight. This applies to long-distance flights, high-altitude operations, or navigating cluttered environments like forests and cities where visual contact is lost.

Because flying beyond your visual line of sight presents higher safety risks to bystanders, operators, and property, CASA requires pilots to pass a formal BVLOS exam. Enrolling in BVLOS training equips you with the essential skills and knowledge needed to clear the exam and secure your BVLOS rating.

Aviation Australia’s 2-day BVLOS course allows learners to train with educators who have strong Remote Pilot or commercial pilot backgrounds, providing real-world context to help master theoretical knowledge.
