AVI50222 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane) and AVI50519 Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating)

This course is designed to equip students who wish to complete their Commercial Pilot Licence and Multi Engine Instrument Rating with the competencies and qualifications to operate as a pilot.

If you have always had a passion with aviation and a burning desire of becoming a Commercial Pilot, this is the course for you. This program includes the Commercial Pilot Aeroplane Licence (CPL) and Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating (MECIR) as outcomes within this combined training package. Upon graduation you will have the skills required for employment a commercial pilot who can fly single and multi engine aircraft, at day or night, and in poor weather conditions.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will earn a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and a Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating (MECIR). They will also have the opportunity to accumulate substantial Instrument Command flight hours during their training, enhancing their employability, especially within the charter industry, immediately after graduation.

Candidates must:
To be eligible for the course, the student must meet the following criteria:
  • Be over 18 years of age at the start of the course
  • Hold a current Class 1 Australian Medical Certificate by the course start date
  • Have successfully passed the Pilot Aptitude Screening Process* and received a firm offer of admission to the course
  • If secondary school education was completed outside of Australia, achieve an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or higher, with no sub-score below 6.0 (academic assessment)
  • Satisfy the Academic Requirements** by the start of the course
  • Hold a valid Aviation Security Identity Card (ASIC) by the start of the course
  • Provide Aviation Australia with a Unique Student Identification (USI) number prior to the start of the course

Flying is a rewarding career, and starting it on the right foot is crucial to ensuring success. At Aviation Australia, we carefully select students to provide them with the best chance of successfully completing their course.

All applicants must complete the Pilot Aptitude Assessment, which consists of a computer-based assessment and an interview. The assessment evaluates three core areas:

  • Skills and Aptitudes
  • Attitude and Behaviour
  • Knowledge and Testing

After completing the computer-based assessment, applicants will undergo an interview with an Aviation Australia team member. The entire assessment process takes approximately four hours. To schedule the assessment, applicants must return a signed conditional letter of offer. The assessment is complimentary for applicants.

**Academic Requirements

To meet the academic requirements, applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  • Hold an Australian Year 12 Certificate, OR
  • Hold an IB Diploma, OR
  • Hold an AQF Certificate IV or higher (where the language of instruction was English), OR
  • Successfully complete an Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) Language, Literacy, and Numeracy Assessment at or above Exit Level 3.

The ACSF assessment is conducted using the “LLN Robot,” an approved tool provided by the College. The assessment may be held at any Aviation Australia campus and is facilitated by an Enrolment Officer (or their delegate), who ensures that the process is carried out with integrity and transparency. Results will be provided to the applicant as soon as practicable after the assessment and will be submitted to the Secretary of the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations in the required format and timeframe.

Study Modes

Theory

Theory components are completed via online and distance learning. Access to a computer with a reliable internet connection is required.

Practical

Once all theory components are successfully completed, practical training including dual training, solo training, simulator training can be undertaken (specific course dates apply).

This is an intensive course; students are expected to complete additional revision on a regular (daily) basis. For minimal disruption, it is recommended that students do not undertake any employment whilst studying this program.

Face to Face

Face to face training is located at White Star Aviation in Ballina, New South Wales. Flight lessons/briefings may be conducted at various aerodromes that may require travel. A minimum of 20 hours per week face to face training is required.

Accelerated Training Option

A 6-month accelerated training option is available and is suitable for those not currently working full-time as a minimum of 30 – 35 hours per week study commitment is required. Please enquire for more information.

Recognition of Prior Learning

If you are a qualified airline pilot or hold an Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) or have completed ATPL theory subjects, you may be able to have your previous studies, qualifications and experience assessed for certification against this course.
