“I fell in love with flying when I was 11 years old,” says Ajay Assi. His interest began after discovering a mobile flight simulator app, a simple experience that sparked a lifelong ambition. What began on a phone soon evolved into a basic home flight simulator, where Ajay continued to build his skills and curiosity. His enthusiasm never waned, and for his 13th birthday, his parents organised a trial flight at Moorabbin Airport. The experience sealed his dream and by the age of 15, Ajay had completed his first solo flight.
Following a pause due to COVID and high school commitments, Ajay briefly took the opportunity to explore other career pathways but soon realised aviation is where he belongs. “When I’m flying, I’m happy. It doesn’t feel like work. It always feels fun and exciting.”
Now training through Aviation Australia at Moorabbin Aviation Services, Ajay speaks highly of the learning environment. “MAS has been amazing. It’s a family-feel and community-focused school, and there’s no intimidation, which really sets it apart from other flight schools.”
Ajay is currently completing his Private Pilot Licence, with his training set to progress toward commercial-level flying. His instructor, Rafi, describes him as a confident and committed student who consistently puts in the hard work. The next stage of Ajay’s training will focus on scenario-based flying, designed to mirror real-world conditions and strengthen his safety awareness and decision-making skills.
After completing his studies this year, Ajay will focus on building experience in independent flying across regional Australia, an important step in his career pathway. His ultimate goal is to become a First Officer flying for a major commercial airline by the age of 26. “I’m turning 23 this year,” Ajay says, “which is why I’m pushing hard to complete all my exams.”
Ajay says the funded training he accessed through Aviation Australia, delivered under the VET Student Loan (VSL) program, played a major role in enabling him to train full time. “It’s made a huge difference. Before, I was working long hours and paying as I went. With VSL, I can focus on my training and really progress my flying.” The funding also supports future qualifications, including multi-engine training, MCC and potentially MCC and ATPL studies through the Advanced Diploma.
His advice to aspiring pilots is simple and practical. “Don’t stop flying, and prioritise the theory.” He also encourages anyone considering aviation to book a trial flight. “The aircraft might look intimidating, but once you’re in the sky, the feeling is unbeatable.”
With strong determination, the right support and a clear pathway ahead, Ajay continues to turn his long-standing passion for flying into a professional aviation career.
